Muay Thai Drills for Children – Layering Skills with Stuart Tomlinson

As a coach and gym owner, I obviously train children on a regular basis. Here, in this clip I filmed with one of my young students Joe Foster, I show how I personally use some of the coaching already featured on the Warrior Collective with juniors.

The start of this drill is one from Panicos Yusuf (specifically his third volume on the Warrior Marketplace). The Jab, lead teep followed by the step off line/pivot out and rear body kick counter to a forward moving opponent.

I then build on this with an additional right straight and switch left body kick. In a training session I would typically start with the Jab/teep for repetitions, add the pivot off line with hand control against forward moving opponent. I would then progress this by adding the rear body kick for more reps, before finishing the drill with the final addition of the right straight/switch left body kick finish.

I like this kind of drill a lot and it can easily form part of most striking based combat sports systems with a little adaption where needed.

Initial attack – Defensive movement – Counter – Re-Attack – Exit/Disengagement
